Who this Course is for

This workshop is designed for a maximum of 20 PhD students and postdocs seeking to develop their skills in scientific publishing and communication. Participants will understand the structure and content of a manuscript, how to assemble effective figures, write impactful titles and abstracts. The second part of the workshop focuses on presenting research effectively in various short formats, such as poster presentations, flash talks, or elevator pitches.  

Style of this Course

The workshop takes place over two consecutive mornings:

Daily: 09:00 to 13:00 (CET/CEST) including breaks

The workshop is offered as a highly engaging and practical live training via Zoom, with interactive elements such as case studies, dynamic group work in breakout rooms, and lively discussion sessions to maximise learning and participation.

 

What you will learn

Day 1 Writing a Paper

This session introduces participants to the fundamental elements of publishing scientific research. Topics include strategic planning for publication, such as determining authorship, organizing data, and selecting the most appropriate journal for submission. Participants will explore the standard structure of a scientific paper, examining the purpose and content of each section: 

  • Introduction 
  • Results 
  • Materials and Methods 
  • Discussion 
  • Data and Figures 
  • Figure Legends 
  • Title and Abstract 

Practical exercises will focus on assembling figures and writing abstracts. Participants will receive peer feedback and guidance from instructors to refine these critical components of a successful scientific manuscript.

Day 2 Communicating Effectively

This session covers strategies for creating impactful research presentations. Participants will learn how to engage their listeners when presenting a poster or delivering a concise and effective flash talk. A significant focus will be on crafting persuasive elevator pitches. The session concludes with a practical exercise where participants develop and present their own research projects as elevator pitches.
