Here’s some useful information to help you plan your trip for your in-person course in Germany

Travel Options

Flying to Frankfurt International Airport (FRA)
  • Closest airport to Heidelberg (approximately 80 km)
  • While we cannot provide an airport shuttle service, there are several transportation options available – more details can be found on the airport website, click on “Transport & Parking”.
  • Please note: taxis taken directly from the airport are not recommended as they cost well over €100 – Uber is available though which may be cheaper.
  • There are two train stations at the airport that serve routes to Heidelberg:
    • Fernbahnhof (long-distance station)
      • Offers fastest connection to Heidelberg
      • Usually requires a change in Mannheim
    •  Regionalbahnhof (regional station)
      • More economical option
      • Slower journey time
      • Typically requires a change at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main station)

 

Flying to alternative airports

Stuttgart Airport (STR) 

  • Located 13 km south of Stuttgart city centre
  • Approximately 1.5 hours from Heidelberg. There are several transportation options available – more details can be found on the airport website
  • Regular train service available from Stuttgart main station to Heidelberg

Karlsruhe Baden Airport (FKB)

  • Small regional airport near Baden-Baden, about one hour south of Heidelberg
  • Shuttle buses connect to Baden-Baden train station – more details can be found on the airport website
  • Note that connections to Heidelberg may be limited

Frankfurt Hahn Airport (HHN)

  • Budget airline hub west of Frankfurt
  • Shuttle buses available to Frankfurt city – more details can be found on the airport website
  • No direct bus service to Heidelberg (previously available service was discontinued)
Train

If you travel by train there are several options. The key stations are:

  • Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main station) – central location in Heidelberg and well-connected to local transportation
  • Mannheim Hauptbahnhof (main station) – a major railway hub in Germany with many national and international connections (international routes include Paris, Marseille, Brussels, Amsterdam, Milan, Basel and Zürich. It is just 20 minutes from Heidelberg with regular connections

Tickets must be purchased before boarding. They are available on the Deutsche Bahn (German railways) online portal, via their mobile app (DB Navigator) or from ticket machines at stations.

Bus Services

  • FLIXBUS offers direct service between Frankfurt Airport and Heidelberg – more info here
  • Lufthansa shuttle bus service – more info here (in German only)

Taxi/Uber

  • Service available from Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg / Leimen
  • Expect costs exceeding €100

Getting to the hotel once in Heidelberg

Public Transport

The Hotel Villa Toskana is located in Leimen, which is close to Heidelberg.

From the main railway station (Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof) take tram number 24 to “Rohrbach Süd” and then change to tram number 23 (direction “Leimen”) and get off the stop “Johannes-Reidel-Strasse”. From there it is about 5 minute walk to the hotel. You cannot buy tickets from the driver, please use the ticket machines at the tram stop and station. The local transport company is the RNV.

If you are coming from the town centre (Bismarckplatz), take the tram number 23 (direction “Leimen”) and get off the stop “Johannes-Reidel-Strasse”. From there it is a 10 minute walk to the hotel. Get off the tram and head south on Rohrbacher Strasse towards Johannes-Reidel-Strasse for 20m, then turn right onto Johannes-Reidel-Strasse for 170m, then turn right onto “In der Warthütte” for 85m then turn left onto Hamburger Strasse. The hotel will be on the right.

  • Tickets must be purchased from machines at tram stops or stations as tram drivers do not sell tickets or online here (in German only)
  • Local transport is operated by RNV (Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr) and VRN (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar)

Taxi

Another way to reach the hotel from the town centre or from the main train station is by taxi. The main taxi switchboard number is: +49 6221 302030.

Uber is available in Heidelberg but the car fleet is currently not extensive so expect delays.
